BEING MICHELLE DOCUMENTARY FILM

BEING MICHELLE follows the astounding journey of a deaf and disabled woman who survived incarceration under unimaginable circumstances by a system that refused to accommodate her needs as a deaf person with autism. Michelle’s trajectory changed when she met Kim Law, a blind volunteer life coach who teaches classes to people in prison. Today, outside of prison, Kim and Michelle are doing the difficult work of unraveling Michelle’s history, of telling the story of Michelle’s traumatic childhood and her adverse experiences in the criminal justice system. With the support of Kim, Michelle realizes her own voice and strength. Throughout the film Michelle’s artwork provides her own depiction of the trauma she survived as well as a means to her recovery. Ultimately, BEING MICHELLE is a story of redemption. It is about the bonds between women committed to thriving in a broken system, who are forging a path to healing that can only come through facing the truth and communicating it, together.

SEIZE THE DAY DOCUMENTARY FILM

Seize The Day follows the journey of Terah Williams, a 23- year old woman fighting for a normal life, despite a medical condition causing ongoing seizures, and the systemic racism she faces within broken social systems threatening to tear her life apart.

We are grateful to be working with Dr. Oliver Brooks, former President of the National Medical Association, who is acting as advisor on this important film. We feel strongly that Terah’s story will empower others from marginalized groups to continue to seek out and demand the health care and support they deserve.

HER SONG DOCUMENTARY FILM

Her Song portrays a devastatingly powerful human story of resilience in the face of systemic injustice and exploitation in India, one of the world’s rising global powers. In Her Song, Indian-born director, Atin Mehra, and co-director, Mae Thornton Mehra capture the intimate story of a family surviving at the very bottom of the caste system as they face the decision of whether or not to send their youngest daughter into the longstanding community tradition of prostitution.  At twelve years old Bulbul flickers between the levity of childhood hope and the brutal reality of her marginalized caste, in which girls are prized for their economic worth. Bearing the weight of a family in crisis, an HIV-positive sister and an historically exploited community barred from other economic opportunities, Bulbul stands at a crossroads where globalization propels centuries of caste-based discrimination to a boiling point. Interweaving intimate verite footage with artful historical narrative, the husband and wife team carefully captures an astonishing oral history of the Banchara Tribe, whose own rich background was erased and re-written during colonial-era India. It is through this telling that Bulbul is empowered to grapple with the limits of her own agency in a society that seeks to reduce her to a commodity.

THRIVING VOICES PROGRAM

For too long the gaze of documentary storytellers have originated from outside of the communities whose stories are being told. Thriving Voices aims to invert this process by training youth from marginalized communities in the modern technologies currently available for documentary filmmakers to share their own stories and perspectives of the world. Thriving Voices is a mobile, hands on documentary film production training program aimed at training youth filmmakers from marginalized communities who have limited access to the tools necessary to share their stories with the world. Through generous sponsorship from donor companies and individuals who believe in the power of story, Thriving Voices trains these young filmmakers in the setting of their own communities as they strengthen their identities, claim their voices and share their perspectives with the world through the medium of film. When relevant, youth filmmakers are connected with specialists from the social science disciplines who support the telling of their stories. In this way the knowledge generated through the university systems supports the very communities about whom research is being funded and conducted within the dominant societies’ structures.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

THRIVING JUSTICE PROGRAM

All too often those very individuals and communities whose powerful stories enlighten and inspire the world are they themselves in need of being heard, being seen and being connected to resources necessary for thriving life. Our Thriving Justice program aims to connect those individuals and communities with sustainable solutions for inter-generational healing and basic human rights including but not limited to healthcare, education, access to justice and livelihood opportunities.

Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome is a condition that exists when a population has experienced multigenerational trauma resulting from centuries of slavery and continues to experience oppression and institutionalized racism today. Added to this condition is a belief (real or imagined) that the benefits of the society in which they live are not accessible to them.
